Determining the Type of Breast Implant

Size

The size of an implant is determined in consultation with the patient. What are their goals in having breast augmentation? Some women just want to be augmenting themselves to look more natural. Some women who’ve had babies want to regain the upper pull fullness that they lost when the babies were done nursing. Depending on what you are trying to acheive will determine what type of implant. Some women who have an A cup, or A minus cup, as some have told me, and they want to be a D cup; that is probably not reasonable.

Height

Also, it has to do with the height of the individual. A woman who is 5′ 1” and a woman who is 6′ 4” putting the same volume implant in will look bigger in the smaller woman.

Athletic

So let’s say a woman is athletic and she likes golf or tennis and she wants to increase the base width of that breast. If she’s using her hand the breast may actually interfere with her swing. That’s a consideration I’ll usually ask a patient:  How athletic are you? If they are athletic, we certainly will discuss the width of the implant. Some women like a very large implant, but they don’t realize sometimes that it interferes with certain athletic activities. Other women are not athletic at all and they just like a wider breast. There are so many options in breast augmentation that a consultation is probably the very best way for a patient to understand al the options that best fit her needs.
